Salt baths are simply a special kettle or "pot" that will heat and hold salts in a liquid or molten condition. The advantage of this system of heat treating is that metal parts can be evenly heated in a very uniform medium. They can be transferred while hot without danger of decarburization or scaling in open air since the surface has a film of protective salts that adheres until washed off.
Operating temperatures for salt baths can be as low as 300ºF or as high as 3000ºF. The salts can be directly heated using electric energy introduced with immersed electrodes, or indirectly heated in a metal pot with either gas or electric heat.
Fluidtherm manufactures these new furnaces or rebuilds them, regardless of their original manufacturer.
